Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you wanted to know about SMP.
The questions we hear most often from new and prospective clients across Sydney, Wollongong and beyond. If your question is not answered here, get in touch and Jackson will answer it personally.
What is scalp micropigmentation (SMP)?
Scalp micropigmentation is a non-surgical hair loss solution where microscopic deposits of organic, carbon-based pigment are placed into the upper layer of the scalp to replicate the look of natural hair follicles. The result is the appearance of a freshly shaved head with full, even coverage, or added density if you still have existing hair.
How much does SMP cost in Australia?
The cost of SMP in Australia varies based on the size of the area being treated, the number of sessions required, and the complexity of your case. Pricing is always confirmed during your free consultation, where Jackson can assess your specific situation and outline a personalised plan. Payment plans are available for those who need them.
Does SMP look natural?
Yes, when performed by an experienced artist, SMP is virtually indistinguishable from real hair follicles. Jackson uses microscopic needles and a layered pigmentation technique that builds natural depth and variation. Most clients report that no one notices, not even people closest to them.
Is SMP painful?
Most clients describe the sensation as mild discomfort rather than pain, similar to a light pinprick or tattoo. Modern technique and high-quality equipment keep things very tolerable. A topical numbing cream can be applied for sensitive areas, and most clients find subsequent sessions easier than the first.
How many sessions do I need?
Most clients require 2 to 3 sessions spaced 7 to 14 days apart. The first session creates the foundation, and subsequent sessions build density and refine the result. More complex cases (significant scarring, alopecia totalis, large areas) may require an additional session.
How long does SMP last?
SMP results typically last 5 to 7 years before any minor touch-up is needed. The pigment is designed to fade slowly and evenly over time, maintaining a natural look throughout. Many clients go significantly longer between touch-ups depending on skin type, sun exposure and aftercare.
Is SMP safe?
Yes, SMP is very safe when performed by a trained professional using sterile equipment and high-quality, organic pigments. Scalp Revival uses only premium carbon-based pigments specifically formulated for scalp micropigmentation, with single-use needles and full hygiene protocols.
What is the recovery time?
There is no real recovery period. You can return to work immediately. The treated area may appear slightly red for a few hours and the pigment may look darker for the first few days before settling into its final shade. Avoid heavy sweating, sun exposure and swimming for 4 to 5 days after each session.
Will SMP fade over time?
SMP fades gradually and naturally over several years. This is by design: it allows the pigment to age naturally with your skin tone and lifestyle. A touch-up session every 5 to 7 years restores the original sharpness and density.
Can SMP be removed?
Yes, SMP can be removed using standard laser tattoo removal if needed. However, the gradual fade rate means most clients simply allow it to fade naturally over time, or refresh it before fade becomes noticeable.
Does SMP work for alopecia?
Yes, SMP is one of the most effective non-surgical solutions for alopecia areata, alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis. Jackson has treated many alopecia clients and the technique can be fully customised based on the pattern and stability of your condition.
Can SMP conceal hair transplant scars?
Yes, SMP is highly effective at concealing both FUE and FUT (strip) hair transplant scars. The pigmentation work breaks up the visual line of the scar by creating the appearance of natural follicle density across and around the scar tissue.
Can women have SMP?
Absolutely. Female hair loss SMP is one of our specialties. For women, SMP is typically used to add density to thinning areas without shaving down, working between the existing hair to fill in the gaps and reduce visible scalp.
How do I prepare for my first session?
Stay hydrated, get a good night's sleep, avoid alcohol and caffeine the morning of, and eat a proper meal beforehand. Shave your head closely the morning of the session if you are receiving a shaved-head SMP. Jackson will provide a full prep guide once you book.
